PostHog bills each product separately by usage, and every product has a free monthly allowance that resets, such as the first 1M analytics events. The Free plan needs no card, includes unlimited team members, one project and a year of data retention, and stops at the free limits so you can't be charged. Adding a card moves you to pay as you go, with six projects, seven years of retention and a billing limit you set per product. PostHog also runs discounts for startups and nonprofits, including a credits programme for early-stage startups.

Questions

What people ask about PostHog.

Can PostHog's Free plan surprise me with a bill?

No, the Free plan has no card on file and usage stops at the free tier limits. When you hit a limit, that product stops collecting data until the month resets. You only start paying when you add a card and move to pay as you go.

How do I stop a traffic spike from running up my PostHog bill?

On pay as you go, you set a billing limit for each product. PostHog stops charging for that product once it hits your limit. The pricing page also says the team will usually refund an unexpected bill, such as one from a side project going viral.

What changes when I add a card to PostHog?

You keep the same monthly free allowance on every product and pay only for usage above it. Projects go from one to six and data retention from one year to seven. Support moves to email, or Slack for accounts spending over $2k a month.

Who can get PostHog's startup credits?

PostHog offers credits to eligible early-stage startups through its startups page. The programme gives up to $50K in credits, subject to its own terms. Nonprofits can ask for a separate discount.

Does PostHog charge per seat?

No, every plan includes unlimited team members. You pay for what each product processes: events, recorded sessions, feature flag requests and so on. SSO, audit logs and custom roles come as optional platform packages.
