GitHub charges per user per month, with three plans: Free, Team and Enterprise. Free gives you unlimited public and private repositories, 2,000 Actions minutes and 500 MB of package storage, while Team and Enterprise raise those allowances and add review rules, Codespaces and, on Enterprise, SAML single sign-on. Copilot and Advanced Security are billed apart from the plan. Startups, nonprofits, students and teachers each have their own discount programme.

Questions

What people ask about GitHub.

What do I lose by staying on GitHub Free?

Free covers unlimited repositories, but it leaves out several collaboration tools for private repositories. Required reviewers, draft pull requests and environment protection rules sit on Team and above. Support on Free comes from the community forum only. A solo developer rarely misses these, while a team of three shipping to production usually does.

How are Actions minutes counted across plans?

Free includes 2,000 CI/CD minutes a month, Team 3,000 and Enterprise 50,000. Package storage grows from 500 MB to 2 GB and then 50 GB. If your builds run past the allowance, you pay for the extra usage, so a busy test suite can cost more than the seats.

Who qualifies for GitHub for Startups?

You apply through one of GitHub's approved startup partners, such as an accelerator or investor. Your company needs outside funding up to Series B, and it must be new to GitHub Enterprise or not have used it in the last six months. Approved startups get 10,000 USD in credits for Enterprise, Copilot and Advanced Security, valid for up to 12 months.

What happens when the startup credits run out?

The credits end after 12 months or once you spend them, whichever comes first. Products you have switched on then move to normal paid billing, and GitHub asks you to authorise your payment method during onboarding for that reason. Downgrading early forfeits the remaining credit and stops you from applying again.

Is Copilot included in a GitHub plan?

No paid plan bundles Copilot. It has its own free tier with 2,000 code completions a month and paid tiers on top. Advanced Security, the add-on for code and secret scanning, is also bought separately from Team or Enterprise.
