Connect Claude to my tools
Claude reads and acts on your own apps once you add MCP servers in Claude Desktop or Claude Code. Start with the place your work already lives: GitHub for code and pull requests, Notion for docs, Linear for issues. Zapier suits you if the app you need has no MCP server of its own, though its bill grows with task volume. All five picks have a free plan, so you can test a connection before paying anything.

Questions
Which app should I connect to Claude first?
Pick the one you open most during the day. Developers usually start with GitHub, since Claude can then read repositories, issues and pull requests in context. Teams that write specs and meeting notes get more from Notion. Add a second server once you use the first one every day.
Does connecting Claude to my tools cost extra?
Claude has a free plan, and GitHub, Linear, Notion and Zapier each have one too. MCP itself is an open protocol, so there is no separate licence for it. Costs appear when you outgrow those free tiers: Zapier charges by task volume, and paid Claude plans give you more usage. A small test setup can run at no cost.
I already automate with Zapier. Do I need MCP as well?
Zapier runs fixed workflows: a trigger fires and the same actions follow every time. An MCP connection lets Claude decide what to read or change based on your request in the chat. Many teams keep their Zaps for routine hand-offs and use Claude for one-off questions across apps. Zapier can also act as the bridge for apps that lack their own MCP server.
Where do I add an MCP server for Claude?
You add servers in Claude Desktop or Claude Code, which are the two places Claude connects to MCP. Each server needs an access token or sign-in for the app it talks to, such as a GitHub token. Give each token the smallest set of permissions the job needs. Restart the app afterwards and Claude lists the new tools it can call.
Is it safe to let an AI assistant edit my Linear issues or repositories?
Claude asks before it runs an action, and you approve or decline each call. Read-only tokens are the safest start: Claude can search issues and code but cannot change them. Grant write access later, per app, once you trust the workflow. Linear's GitHub integration keeps issue status in sync with shipped code, so you rarely need Claude to touch both.
