Mailchimp bills by the number of contacts in your audience, so a list of unsubscribed or cleaned addresses can still push you into a higher tier. The Free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 sends a month with one user seat, and Mailchimp pauses sending when you pass those limits. Essentials, Standard and Premium raise the monthly send allowance to 10, 12 and 15 times your contact count. Registered nonprofits and charities can ask for a 15% discount, which has to be in place before you pay.

Questions
What happens if my list grows past my Mailchimp plan's contact limit?
On a paid plan, Mailchimp bills you an overage for the extra contacts instead of stopping your campaigns. On the Free plan it pauses sending until you remove contacts or upgrade. Archiving contacts you no longer email is the usual way to keep the count down, because they stop counting towards your bill.
Do I need a card to try Essentials or Standard?
Both paid plans come with a 14-day trial. Essentials asks for a card up front, while Standard has a card-free option. Without a card you can send up to 100 emails during the trial, then you add payment details to keep going.
How does the nonprofit discount work on Mailchimp?
Mailchimp gives 15% off to verified nonprofits and charities. You request it from Mailchimp support with proof of your status, ideally before your first paid month. The discount is not applied backwards to invoices you have already paid.
Is the Free plan enough for a small shop newsletter?
It suits a list of up to 250 contacts that you email a couple of times a month. You get one audience, one user and basic email building, with Mailchimp branding and no automation flows. Once you want welcome series or abandoned-cart emails, Standard is the plan that adds those flows.
Does a yearly Mailchimp plan cost less than paying monthly?
Mailchimp's pricing page lists a lower monthly rate when you commit for 12 months. It also cuts 15% on paid plans once you reach 10,000 contacts. If your list size swings a lot during the year, compare the yearly price at your peak size before committing.
