On 6 Oct 2026 we found this on figma.com: free for students and teachers. Without it, figma.com lists Figma at a free plan, with paid plans on request.

Figma charges per seat, and the seat type sets the price: a Full seat for designers, a Dev seat for Dev Mode, and a cheap Collab seat for FigJam and Slides. The free Starter plan gives you one team with one folder and 3 files, plus unlimited drafts. Professional bills monthly or yearly, while Organization and Enterprise are yearly only. Verified students and teachers get the paid features through the Education plan, as long as the work is not commercial.

Questions
Which seat do I need to pay for on Figma Professional?
Professional has three seat types: Full at $16 a month, Dev at $12 and Collab at $3 (USD). A Full seat opens every Figma product, including Design and Make. A developer who only inspects files and copies code needs a Dev seat, and someone who only comments or uses FigJam can sit on Collab.
How far does the free Starter plan go?
Starter gives you one team with one folder and 3 files, plus unlimited personal drafts. It includes 150 AI credits a day, capped at 500 a month. Once your team needs a fourth shared file or a team library, you move to Professional.
Can I pay monthly on every plan?
Only Professional offers monthly billing. Organization and Enterprise are billed yearly. If you add a seat mid-term on Professional, Figma prorates it, and on the two larger plans new seats are invoiced quarterly.
How do I get the Education plan, and for how long?
You sign up with your school email and verify your status: university students and staff go through SheerID, high schools by school email domain, and bootcamps through their admin. Student status lasts one year and teacher status two years. After that you reapply if you are still studying or teaching.
Can I use the free Education plan for freelance work?
No. Figma's terms for Education rule out commercial use and client projects, and they also exclude non-teaching school staff. When your status runs out, editors drop to view-only and teams with four or more files lock. Move client work to a paid Professional team before that happens.
