AI coding assistants

“I want an AI to help me code”
1 of 2

Coding tools split by how much you hand over. Claude Code and Codex are agents: they read the codebase, run commands and open pull requests from your terminal or the cloud. Cursor and Windsurf are editors with an agent built in, good for multi-file changes while you watch. GitHub Copilot stays closest to your current setup, suggesting code in VS Code, JetBrains and on github.com. Your existing subscription often decides it: Codex comes with ChatGPT, Claude Code with paid Claude plans.

Questions

What people ask about AI coding assistants.

Should I switch editors or add an agent to the one I have?

Cursor is built on VS Code, so your extensions and shortcuts carry over, and it has a free plan to test the switch. Windsurf is also a full editor built around its Cascade agent. If you would rather not move, GitHub Copilot works inside VS Code and JetBrains, and Claude Code and Codex run in the terminal next to any editor. Many developers keep their editor and add a terminal agent.

I already pay for ChatGPT or Claude. Do I need another subscription?

Codex comes with ChatGPT plans, and the free plan gives limited access, so you can start without paying extra. Claude Code is included with paid Claude plans from $20 a month. Both work in the terminal, in IDE extensions and on the web or cloud. Try the one tied to your current plan before adding a separate editor subscription.

Can an agent work on a GitHub issue without me at the keyboard?

GitHub Copilot can take on an issue as an agent and open a pull request with the changes. Codex runs tasks in the cloud and also reviews pull requests. Claude Code edits files, runs commands and opens pull requests from your terminal, desktop app or the web. Review every pull request as you would a colleague's before merging.

How do I give the AI context about my project and tools?

Cursor connects to MCP servers, which give its agent extra context about your project, such as docs, tickets or a database. Claude Code reads the whole codebase and connects to MCP servers as well. Windsurf's Cascade follows the file and task in front of you. Keep a short project notes file with conventions and commands, because every agent works better with it.

Is it safe to let an AI agent run commands on my machine?

Agents like Claude Code, Codex and Windsurf's Cascade can run terminal commands, which saves time and needs limits. Start with approval for each command, work in a git branch and keep secrets out of the repository. Cloud agents such as Codex run in a separate environment, which reduces risk to your own machine. For client code, check your contract on sharing source with third-party services.
