Ask your database

“Let an agent query Postgres safely”
1 of 2

Asking your data in plain English takes two parts: a database that holds it and an assistant that can query it. Supabase and Neon both run managed Postgres with free plans; Supabase adds auth, storage and generated APIs, while Neon scales to zero when idle and branches like code. Claude connects to your tools through MCP servers in Claude Desktop and Claude Code, so it can write the SQL, run it and explain the answer.

Questions

What people ask about ask your database.

Can AI query my database without me writing SQL?

Yes, once Claude is connected to the database through an MCP server in Claude Desktop or Claude Code. You ask a question such as last month's top customers, Claude writes the SQL, runs it and explains the result. Check the query it shows you for anything that drives a decision. It works best when your tables and columns have clear names.

How do I stop the AI from changing or deleting data?

Give it a database user with read-only rights, so it can query but not write. In Supabase, row-level security also controls which rows each role can read. Neon lets you branch the database, so you can point the assistant at a copy instead of production. Point-in-time restore on Neon is a safety net if something goes wrong anyway.

Supabase or Neon for a small project?

Supabase gives you a full backend: database, auth, file storage, realtime updates and APIs generated from your tables. Neon focuses on Postgres alone and scales to zero when nobody uses it, which suits side projects idle most of the day. Each can be tried without paying. Pick Supabase if you are also building an app, Neon if you only need the database.

My data lives in spreadsheets. Is moving it to a database worth it?

A database pays off once several sheets need joining or the data grows past what a sheet handles comfortably. Postgres loads CSV files straight into tables, and the free plans of Supabase and Neon cover small datasets. From there Claude can answer questions across all your tables at once. Keep the spreadsheet as an export while you check the numbers match.

Does customer data in the database raise GDPR questions?

Yes, personal data stays subject to GDPR wherever it is stored and whoever queries it. Choose an EU hosting region when you create the project and sign each vendor's data processing agreement. Limit what the AI can read to the tables it needs, for example by leaving out names and emails. Note in your records which tools process customer data.
